What to Pack for a Day Hike

What to Pack for a Day Hike

Thursday, August 13, 2020

If you are getting ready to go on a day hike, here is a check list of 15 items to pack. Our family loves our Marmot day pack for hiking. This bag works for both adults, teens and children. It is small, light, and holds everything we need for a day hike.

  1. Hat

  2. Sunglasses

  3. Water bottle (depending on how long-atleast 2)

  4. Snacks/lunch (granola bars, cuties, cheese sticks, peanut butter on pita bread, snickers bar, apples, cashews, etc)

  5. Small Trash bag (leave no trace)

  6. Sunblock & chapstick (very dry weather)

  7. Bug spray

  8. Rain jacket (gore-tex if possible)

  9. Layers (out west especially go prepared with gloves, hat, jacket)

  10. Bear spray (put in the drink holder of your pack so you can easily reach it)

  11. Phone (always tell someone where you are doing-we also take a picture of the trailhead map before we begin our hike)

  12. Map (in case you lose cell service)

  13. Compass

  14. First Aid Kit (essentials listed here)

  15. Whistle

Other Optional Items:

  1. Camera

  2. Journal

  3. Water shoes with straps (if you are crossing rivers)

  4. Trekking Poles

Happy hiking! Our favorite family hike recently was to the Forks of Cascade Canyon in the Grand Teton National Park. We were scoping out future adventure travel trips for Created for Adventure.
