six reasons to take a wilderness adventureHiking vs. trekking. What’s the difference? Is there a distinction between hiking and trekking? Hiking and trekking are frequently used interchangeably.

To help you understand the difference between hiking and trekking, we thought it would be helpful to explain the differences between them, so you know what kind of trip you’re going on and how to prepare for it.

What Is the Difference between Hiking and Trekking?

Hiking and trekking both describe walking in the outdoors, usually wearing hiking boots. However, the official definitions of hiking and trekking have different meanings.

Hiking is defined as “the activity of going for a long walk, especially in the country or wood.”

Trekking means “going on a long, arduous journey typically on foot.”

So, according to the dictionary, there is a slight difference between hiking and trekking.

On the other hand, trekking is emphasized as being slightly more difficult than hiking. Whereas hiking incorporates the word "walk," which is often considered lighthearted, easy, and enjoyable. Trekking is characterized as a "journey," which is typically more difficult, needs more effort, and takes more than one day.

How Are They Different and Similar?

Generally, hiking is used to refer to day hikes, whereas trekking refers to multi-day hikes in more difficult environments. However, hikes can be multi-day and could include a few days in a tent. On the other hand, Treks are always thought to be multi-day journeys. They usually last at least a few days on the route, but they might last for many days, weeks, or months.

Trekking typically takes you to areas that are significantly less accessible than hikes. This is why they are more difficult, but they can cover a wide range of terrain, and both aspire to get you out into nature. Since both hiking and trekking involve getting out into nature and frequently venturing off the beaten path, the equipment required is similar.

For both, you'll need everything you'd normally need to get out into nature which includes decent hiking boots, waterproof clothes, a backpack, plenty of water, snacks, and so on. Trekking requires you to be out on the route for a longer period of time, so you should bring a tent, sleeping bag and pad,  first aid kit and multi-purpose clothing.
